What is Ischemic Colitis?

This is a severe condition where the blood supply to the large intestine is significantly reduced, causing inflammation and damage to the large intestine.

Typical Symptoms of Ischemic Colitis

  • Blood in stool

  • Nailbed hemorrhage (2 fingers or more)

  • History of tuberculosis

  • Noisy breathing; e.g. wheezing, rattling

  • History of atrial fibrillation

  • Lower left abdomen or tummy pain

  • Abdominal pain

  • Lower abdominal pain

Treatmentof Ischemic Colitis

This typically requires hospital care. Injectable antibiotics might be given to prevent infections, and medication might be given to treat any underlying cause. In severe cases, surgery may be needed as well.
