It is an inflammatory condition of the gut. It is part of a group of diseases known as inflammatory bowel disease or IBD. It can affect anywhere from the mouth to the anus (end of the bowel). The exact cause is not well known.
A condition in which milk is poorly digested and absorbed. This occurs more commonly in adults, as the enzyme for digesting milk (lactase) decreases with age. Other risk factors include recent gut infections and non-Caucasian ethnicity.
Bacterial infection of the gut. It can be prevented by cleaning fruits and vegetables, cooking raw meat properly to kill bacteria causing food poisoning, and making sure all water is boiled before consumption.
