About the Symptom

Dry mouth is a condition where the salivary glands in the mouth don't produce enough saliva to keep the mouth moist.

Seek professional care if you experience any of the following symptoms

  • Fever

  • double vision

  • Easy fatiguability

  • Seizure attack

  • Abnormal sensation (tingling, prickling)

  • Unexplained weight loss of 5% or more in 1 month

  • Recent weight loss

Possible Causes

Generally, Dry mouth can be related to:

  • Hyperparathyroidism

The parathyroid glands are located behind the thyroid at the bottom of the neck and produce parathyroid hormone. Hyperparathyroidism occurs when these glands produce too much parathyroid hormone. Causes include problems with the parathyroid glands, gland enlargement, or a gland tumor. It can cause problems with vitamin D, calcium, osteoporosis and kidney issues.

  • Sheehan's Syndrome

It is also known as postpartum hypopituitarism. This condition occurs due to blood loss or low blood pressure during childbirth, leading to a lack of oxygen and damage to the part of the brain responsible for hormone production. This results in low levels of these hormones in the body.

  • Hypopituitarism

The pituitary gland, a part of the brain, controls hormone levels throughout the body. Hypopituitarism disrupts this control, causing hormone levels to drop and organ function to decrease. Causes include tumors, prior radiotherapy, infections, hereditary issues, unknown causes and brain trauma. The symptoms depend on which hormone is low and varies by person.

  • Sjogren Syndrome
  • Diabetic Neuropathy

Related serious diseases

Sometimes, Dry mouth may be related to these serious diseases:

  • Dehydration

Dehydration happens when you lose more fluid than you consume, leaving your body without enough water. Common causes include inadequate intake, diarrhea, vomiting, and fever. Dehydration can also cause serious complications like seizures, urinary and kidney problems.

  • Hypernatremia
  • Hyperosmolar Hyperglycemic State (HHS)

  • Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA)
