About the Symptom

Gums problems include bleeding during and after tooth brushing, inflammation causing red and swollen gums, persistent bad breath or bad taste in the mouth, gum recession, formation of deep pockets between the tooth and gum tissue which may cause loosening and shifting of teeth. These can occur due to infection, poor dental hygiene, and other medical conditions.

When to see a doctor

Seek professional care if you experience any of the following symptoms

  • Fever

Possible Causes

Generally, Gum problems can be related to:

  • Herpes Simplex

Painful blisters caused by herpes simplex virus infection. This can happen on the lips (cold sores) or groin (genital herpes). After the first infection, the virus stays dormant in the body. If the immune system weakens, such as from lack of sleep, the virus can reactivate.

  • Burn/Scald of Roof of Mouth

Palatal thermal injury or palatal burn happens when the roof of the mouth (palate) gets damaged from coming into contact with heat or hot substances.

  • Osteomalacia / Rickets

Rickets is the softening and weakening of bones in children, usually due to an extreme and prolonged vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium and phosphorus from food. Insufficient vitamin D makes it difficult to maintain proper calcium and phosphorus levels in bones, which can cause rickets.

  • Hypophosphatasia (HPP)

  • Viral Enanthem
