About the Symptom

Jaw claudication refers to pain or discomfort in the jaw that typically occurs while chewing. It can be due to any number of things including temporomandibular joint (TMJ) issues, blood vessel (vascular) issues, or issues with the muscles of mastication.

When to see a doctor

Seek professional care if you experience any of the following symptoms

  • Jaw pain after chewing

Possible Causes

Generally, Jaw claudication can be related to:

  • Giant Cell Arteritis (Temporal Arteritis)

GCA is a condition characterized by chronic inflammation of large and medium-sized blood vessels in the body. The exact cause is unknown but a faulty immune response leads the body to attack it's own blood vessels. Notably, blood vessels to the eyes may be affected leading to blindness if left untreated. Risk factors include advanced age, female gender, and other autoimmune diseases.

  • Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA)

A chronic inflammatory disease where the body's immune system attacks multiple joints, most commonly in the hands and feet. The cause and trigger is unknown.
